The Axe Story

In the middle of cutting down trees, a borrowed axe fell into the river and man cried out, “It was a borrowed axe!”  If you have ever borrowed something from someone to use and something like this happened to you, you know the exact feeling!  Immediately Elisha asked “Where did it fall”. Elisha was led by the Lord to cut a stick and threw it into the water at the very spot the axe fell.  Soon the axe head floated to the surface and the prophet was told to grab it!

There was need to build a new Meeting Place.  The group of prophets decided to go down near the river to cut trees because there were plenty of logs available. They had reached out to Elisha and he agreed to join them in this preparation. I found this story in 2 Kings 6:1-7.

What about the story of an Axe?  Elisha was God’s prophet and spent time waiting on the Lord. The building was to be used for God’s glory! I’m reminded that God uses our everyday circumstances to teach us about Himself and His providential purpose to work all things for our growth if we will only trust Him.  In that trust, we need to have the vision to see Him at work. Well, if God can cause an axe to float, he definitely cares about what might appear insignificant to us and work it out for His glory when we trust him completely.

Ephesians 3:20 says: “Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.”
