A New Thing

“For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland”.

Isaiah 43:19

“New” refers to having recently come into existence or use. God’s promise to bring about a fresh start, new opportunities, and blessings for his people, often happens when they least expect it. It signifies a departure from the old and a movement into a new season of hope and renewal.

This verse is key about God doing “a new thing”. It speaks of God making a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert, symbolizing God's ability to overcome obstacles and provide for his people in unexpected ways. Just as He has done before.  The "new thing" is not just about a change in circumstances, but a spiritual renewal and a fresh outpouring of God's grace. It’s about offering a new perspective and the way forward.

We are reminded of spiritual transformation in 2 Cor. 5:17; Lamentations 3:22 reveals new mercies every morning; and Revelation 21:5 reminds us about God making all things new.

The coming of Jesus to earth was the new thing in Isaiah's prophetic words. This points towards the ultimate superhighway home into God's presence, then finally, home to Him in heaven for eternity. Doesn’t this sound exciting! David anticipated a day when “all ends of the earth would turn to God” in Psalm 22.

When God does a new thing, it is not something He has not done before. Instead, He is refreshing our reality with new hope and life. Being the Creator, we know that his actions are not random, or unmeasured. Instead, when He does something new, it is always rooted in His eternal, unchanging nature and our identity as His children. Would you allow this to lead you to desire to discover Him more through the scriptures as we desire to know Him deeper?

The new thing is on the horizon, the path in the wilderness and the river in the desert you might be currently experiencing. Trust that God has it all in store for you, blessings in this temporary world before we reach the eternal blessing of heaven with Him. Regardless of what may be happening, we can live with His joy knowing that the best is yet to come! His invitation is to trust, dwell, delight, and rest in him.  He has the final word in everything regardless of what the circumstances. We can trust His leading because he does not make mistakes!

Pray your response to the Lord personally, meaningfully and genuinely!

Reflection: By letting go of the past and trusting in God's plan, we can experience the “new thing” He is doing and wants to do in our lives today.
