“Turn my eyes from worthless things, and give me life through your word.”
Psalm 119:37
The moment we walk into a restaurant, a mall, or grocery store our senses tend to easily get bombarded with various images or cultures even if we don’t willingly participate in these things. It is so easy to fill our minds with meaningless worldly distractions. The sights, sounds and worldly messages can easily cluster our minds and undermine our ability to be focused on the Lord.
David reminds us about having the correct focus in the above text. We cannot walk around blindfolded but we have the ability to look way and take control of what we want to see. Guarding our hearts and mind against worldliness is a far better witness to unbelievers than trying to explain. This takes focused effort and reliance upon God’s grace to turn away from worldly images rather than staring at them with interest and curiosity. But of course there is a difference when it is a piece of beautiful art that’s worth observing and admiring! It appears that modern media is designed to instantly grab our attention to “hook us” instantly and emotionally!
This is what Paul reminds us in In Philippians 4:8 “And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Filling our minds with Truth (Jesus) has an amazing cleansing and refreshing effect and enables us to build a meaningful relationship with the Lord.
Pray your response to the Lord personally, meaningfully and genuinely!
Reflect: We have God’s texts available daily to us, like today’s. What is yours for today?
