“The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold”. Psalm 18:2
In the Bible, the rock is a symbol of strength, stability, and faith, and God is often referred to as “The Rock”, underscoring His reliability and eternal nature. Rocks are natural objects that can weather storms and endure the passage of time also giving us what we need. This makes them a fitting metaphor for God's enduring and the unshakeable presence and provision.
Once I hiked with friends to the stone in the above picture. It is natural, on a very high level, so massive and quite a sight to behold! It is immovable; strong enough to provide protection and a fortress for safety. It takes about two and a half hours to get there from the bottom. While at the top, there was a heavy downpour. So, we quickly took shelter underneath the part of the rock that extended as a covering until the rain stopped. Thereafter, we descended to the lower ground. This was such a great reminder of how God protects us from drowning in the rough waters and from the storms and downpours of life in a practical way!
Wild honey bees can make hives in rock crevices. Honey in the Rock invokes a clear and creative picture of God’s sweet goodness in places we don’t expect to find Him. “In the Bible, honey represents God's law and Word. David says the rules of the Lord that warn and guide us are “sweeter also than honey, than drippings of the honeycomb” (Ps. 19:10), a reminder that the Lord feeds us with honey from the rock. When we are in the wilderness, we can still experience sweetness because we trust and know Jesus.
The “Promised Land” is characterized as a land "flowing with milk and honey," which implies a land extremely well-suited to growing food and raising livestock. Though many other peoples lived there at the time these words were spoken, God promised to change the situation and place Israel in this land. “And if the Lord is pleased with us, he will bring us safely into that land and give it to us. It is a rich land flowing with milk and honey.” Numbers 14:8. We could also refer to this as God’s provision and blessings in our lives.
Dear Lord, our refuge in the storms of life, we thank you for your protection. Teach us to call on you when we feel overwhelmed. Help us to lean on you. You are our Rock when we are lost, afraid, need guidance or provision. We praise and worship You.
Reflect:
What do you need to start doing or stop doing this week to trust God with the battles you’re facing?
Meditate on Psalm 81:16 “But I would feed you with the finest wheat. It would satisfy you with wild honey from the rock”.
